Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Treatment/Cure

As Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome occurs due to excessive intake of Cannabis, so quiting cannabis will help a lot in getting rid of this syndrome. The main symptoms of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome are nausea and vomiting. So various medications are prescribed but the effect is temporary. Traditional medications are useless in treating nausea and vomiting. When patient quit taking Cannabinoid, the symptoms take almost 7 to 10 days to relief. Patient education is an important part of Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome treatment, patient should have an idea that cannabis is making him/her ill.

Patient should know about the side effects of excessive Cannabinoid intake. The only treatment, which is considered effective till now, is quitting Cannabinoid intake. Cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational enhancement therapy are considered the treatment options for patients with Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.

Patient usually take hot water bath to relief the symptoms. But it is temporarily. The temperature of water should be more than 41°C. Patient may experience dehydration due to excessive and severe vomiting and also due to hot water bath. This dehydration can be treated with the help of IV fluids. If patient face severe dehydration, then hospitalization is necessary. Patient should immediately quit taking Cannabinoid. Topical capsaicin is used by some of the clinicians just to relief the symptoms of cannabinoids hyperemesis syndrome. It is applied on the periumbilical area to treat the acute symptoms of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.

Capsaicin has greater affinity and is effective in treating this syndrome. It is used as a 1st line treatment in Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. In case, when capsaicin tube is not available, then hot water bath is preffered to stop vomiting and nausea immediately. But there are some precaution which should be kept in mind while preffering hot water bath. Patient should not have burn or injury on skin and patient should not be dehydrating.

It is not easy for patient to quit cannabis or marijuana immediately, it needs a psychological therapy to support the treatment mentally. So some of the antipsychotics are prescribed to to relief the symptoms completely. These antipsychotics are haloperidol and olanzapine. Sometimes benzodiazepines are also prescribed like lorazepam.

These show mixed results on patient. Other than these drugs, some of the other drugs are also prescribed but the efficacy of these drugs is not clear. So these drugs are under observation. These drugs include neurokinin 1 receptor antagonist, first generation anti histamines like diphenhydramine, non antipsychotic antidopaminergics like metoclopramide and 5 HT3 receptor antagonists.
Other than these all above mentioned drugs, acetaminophen is also considered of great benefit in treating

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. As it is helpful in treating the headache patient experience. Headache usually occurs due to increased stress on nervous system. Opioids are also used for the purpose of relieving abdominal pain. Patient due to severe vomiting, feels pain in stomach. This pain is usually unbearable. Opioids help a lot in treating pain. But opioids has a drawback of worsening nausea and vomiting so it's use is discouraged.
